The Story
Dijontae Thornton
From San Bernardino's east side, Dijontae Thornton suited up as a defender for the Arroyo Valley Hawks, playing varsity football in the San Andreas League during the 2011-12 season. As a senior, Thornton was a force on the defensive line, recording 40 solo tackles and 56 total tackles — demonstrating the kind of intensity and dedication that defines AVHS football.
At 6.2 tackles per game, Thornton was among the most productive defenders on the field. He recorded 1.5 sacks and added an interception, showing his ability to impact the game from the secondary and the line of scrimmage. In the San Andreas League — one of the most competitive athletic conferences in the Inland Empire — Thornton's performance stood out.
Playing under the San Bernardino sun, on fields across the 909, Dijontae Thornton represented Arroyo Valley High School with the kind of grit and determination that the city demands. This is his story. The story of a student-athlete who gave everything on the field, who showed up every day ready to work, and who embodied what it means to be an AVHS Hawk.
The Full Story
A Defender's Mentality
Dijontae Thornton came to Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino with one goal — to play football at the highest level possible. The Hawks compete in the San Andreas League, one of the most competitive athletic conferences in Southern California. It's a league where every team is talented, every game matters, and every player has to earn their spot.
Thornton earned his. As a varsity defender, he became one of the most productive players on the defense, a leader on the field who showed up ready to work every single day.
The Stats Don't Lie
In his senior season, Dijontae Thornton put together a campaign that put him among the elite defensive players in the San Andreas League. 40 solo tackles. 56 total tackles. 1.5 sacks. 1 interception. An average of 6.2 tackles per game.
Those numbers represent more than just statistics. They represent a player who was in the backfield, making plays, stopping opponents, and controlling the line of scrimmage.
Playing in the 909
The San Andreas League is not a league for the faint of heart. Teams like Arroyo Valley, Rialto, Fontana, and others bring some of the best high school football talent in the state to the field every Friday night.
Dijontae Thornton played in that league. He faced the best receivers, the best offensive linemen, and the best football minds that the Inland Empire had to offer.
A Legacy at AVHS
Graduating in 2012, Dijontae Thornton left behind a legacy of hard work, production, and dedication. He wore the gold and black with pride. He represented San Bernardino on the field, in the film room, and in the weight room.
This documentary is his story. The story of a kid from the 909 who showed up, worked hard, and not only made an impact on the field, but in the hearts of those who loved him.
